Database Manager

$160 billion Asset Management Firm in Boston

Department Profile
The Database Team is charged with managing the global database infrastructure for the firm having a strong focus with MS SQL Server based technologies.

Position Profile
Reporting to the Infrastructure Manager, the Database Manager will be in charge of both Database Support and Enterprise Data Architecture.

Primary Responsibilities
Responsible for the enterprise database landscape including: back-office data warehouses, trading systems, accounting systems, market data warehouses, research platforms and other both off-the-shelf and proprietary solutions

Manage the firm-wide coordination and collaboration of a critical portfolio of database projects, prioritize by value-add to the firm and see through to impeccable execution of each

Manage a global team of database administrators and architects including off-shore, on-shore and consultants

Spearhead the development of a GDOC (Global Database Operations Center) where our systems will be continuously monitored 24x7 via 3rd party products, in-house scripts and a operational dashboard

Manage a production environment consisting of 300+ databases, and 30 production SQL Servers, most of which are read-intensive databases with a large data load cycle while some are OLTP-based mission critical trading systems

Establish database development/management lifecycles in order to achieve better: performance, security, resiliency, scalability, operations, etc

Strategize, establish and sustain strong alliances with all of the investment divisions

Strengthen the overall market data database frameworks, develop systematic methodologies to both improve the awareness of data quality issues as well as rectify them

Establish strategic partnerships with market data providers, database infrastructure sw/hw channels as well as 3rd party vendors of capital market applications

Establish and enforce our database standards, best practices, methodologies, processes and procedures for every aspect encompassing the lifecycle of a database

Improve the database release management process and ensure only quality code is release into the pristine production environment

Research new technologies that will enable us to enhance: performance, heighten security, ensure uptime, automate common/redundant administrative duties

Projects include: off-shoring, data-center, business continuity, monitoring, data security, SQL 2005 upgrades, performance analysis, data depduplication

Mandatory Requirements
An average of 10-15+ years total IT experience

An average of 8-9+ years Database Systems experience spanning Architecture, Development, QA and Administration primarily with SQL Server technologies and other platforms such as Oracle, Sybase, Vertica, etc would be a plus

Knowledge of the financial industry (capital markets) is required

Experience
Experience in implementing and/or managing off-shore teams

Experience in strategy development, formulating executable plans

Experience with architecting, managing and implementing HA/DR solutions as well as establishing BCPs

Familiar with specialty database monitoring software and advanced monitoring techniques

Experience in crafting management procedures for VLDBs - 300+ GB in size

Familiar with HF databases systems such as KX or Vertica

Familiar with query performance analysis, improvements and troubleshooting performance degradation

Extensive experience with SQL Server 2000/2005 including such areas of: table partitioning, mirroring, full-text management, etc

Experience writing comprehensive and descriptive documentation

Understanding of the database development lifecycle, including database creation, table design, etc.

Familiar with ETL tools, primarily with SSIS 2005, Informatica, DTS, Ab Inition, etc

Experience in the management of OLAP databases, most specifically with SSAS 2005

Understanding of Front-End Applications and Middle-Tier Systems (.NET, COM+, etc)

Experience with server hardware such as RAID, SAN/NAS/DAS devices

Solid conceptual and pragmatic understanding of operating systems (e.g. Windows 2003)

Experience with user management /security administration systems such as Active Directory
